WHAT IS A FORENSIC INTERVIEW (FI)?A Forensic Interview is a single session, recorded interview designed to gather information when there are concerns of possible abuse. It is conducted by investigators who have been specially trained and certified. Because it is recorded, this eliminates the need for unnecessary re-telling of the event. Children are interviewed without an adult present in the interview room. However, the child and caregivers are provided with support during and after the interview. Our interviews are performed by DCF and Law Enforcement investigators, acting as a team.

HOW TO PREPARE YOUR CHILD FOR THEIR INTERVIEW:You know your child best, so can best decide what they need to know before the interview, and how soon to tell them. It is helpful to inform them that someone wishes to talk to them about what was reported, and they’ll be talking to them alone. Give them permission to talk freely, however it is equally important not to rehearse or tell you child what to say. It is important that they do not discuss their interview with others before the interview.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE INTERVIEW?When you arrive at NUSI/CAC, a member of our team will greet you, and you’ll be asked to wait in our child friendly waiting room. The interviewer will escort your child to the interview room, and our Victim Advocate will meet with you. Our Victim Advocate will be able to answer questions you may have and provide you with additional resources.
-
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE INTERVIEW?Our investigators will inform you of next steps. Often, they will hold a brief meeting with the caregiver following the interview. During this time, your child will be offered a snack and will meet with the Victim Advocate. Your child will be supervised during this time. Our victim advocate will inform you of any referrals recommended for counseling or additional medical care.
